About Galliarda

Galliarda comprises:

Sara Stowe – soprano and percussion

Ibi Aziz – viola da gamba

Richard MacKenzie – lute, theorbo and five-course guitar

Wendy Hancock – Baroque flute, recorder, viol

Galliarda is a unique small classical music group, consisting of Sara Stowe (soprano and percussion), Ibi Aziz (viola da gamba), Richard MacKenzie (lute, theorbo and five-course guitar) and Wendy Hancock  (Baroque flute, recorder, viol) – all highly respected performers who have wide experience of performing internationally, recording, teaching and research in the fields of Renaissance and Baroque Music.

Our two outstanding qualities are firstly that we present an unusual combination of instruments, offering maximum variety, with soprano voice, two viols, recorder(s) or flute, combined with lute, early guitar, theorbo and percussion.

Secondly, we are highly entertaining – where appropriate we engage with the audience by talking about and demonstrating the instruments, and we include witty (and bawdy) readings.

Galliarda was formed as recently as 2010 in order to perform in country houses and other historical settings. Sara Stowe and Wendy Hancock had already met when recording Renaissance music together in Oxford for The Gift of Music label back in 2002. Ian Gammie then joined on viola da gamba, and brought with him a huge interest and knowledge of Spanish and South-American music. Richard MacKenzie  joined next,  recommended by the eminent lutenist Linda Sayce, for his outstanding ability on early plucked instruments.  Ian Gammie sadly, has recently decided to retire, but he is replaced by the highly-acclaimed viola da gamba player Ibi Aziz; nevertheless, the strong Spanish and South-American influence remains in place.

We have recently completed a tour of Great Britain during the year 2013-14, as a result of being one of the selected ensembles for the Concert Promoters’ Network Brochure. This is organised through Making Music (formerly the National Federation of Music Societies), supported by the Arts Council, England.

Last year we released our first CD entitled ‘Josep i Maria’ (Spanish and Catalan carols and dances), price £12.50 (incl p & p), or £10 at our concerts.
